While studying in Bilbao, Spanish Basque Country, I took the opportunity to attend the 'Motor
Show Telefónica MoviStar", a celebrity karting event held in the local exhibition centre. There
were some star names from the world of rallying, circuit racing and motorcycling, such as
Carlos Sainz, Williams test driver Marc Gené and 125 cc race winner Toni Elias. Unfortunately
all the promised drivers (François Delecour, Gilles Panizzi, Oriol Servia...) didn't show up.
The main race was won by BAR test driver Patrick Lemarie.
Because of our previous experiences of photographing indoor karting were not so good, I
was planning to use only one roll of Fuji Superia 800 film. However, the circuit was pretty
well lighted and then I realised that the organisers let people get out of the grandstands
and stand just behind the low fences around the circuit (compare that with
Thunder Karting 1998 when we weren't allowed to take
photos at all because our equipment was jugded to be too good - what a joke!). At that point
I had already used the entire film and had only Kodak Elitechrome 100 slide film with me,
which obviously wasn't ideal, but with flashlight some of the photos actually turned out a lot
better than I expected. I just wish I had brought our Metz flashlight to Bilbao, as the
internal one of Canon EOS 500 is quite poor.
